And 'truly an honor, a witness to be asked, and like most of you probably want to do your best to be worthy of this honor. You are probably hoping that your speech reflects your attitude to this privilege, and your feelings about the groom. A speech well done, man can whistle better than the celebration of marriage for the excitement.
Your best ally is to act like a boy scout and be prepared. Spending a few hours just thinking about your feelings and thoughts, even before you startto put pen to paper. Several weeks before the event, you are now ready mentally to begin making a rough draft of your ideas.
Wedding Speeches
There are some common elements to all speeches. Start by introducing yourself, and by acknowledging the importance of the day itself. You should also use the moment to give a nod to the parents of the bride and the groom - or any other significant attendees - and thank them for sponsoring the events of the day. Congratulate them, and then welcome everyone.
With the necessities out of the way, you can begin the body of your speech. Many choose this moment to interject some humor by telling a few quick jokes to warm the audience up. Remember though, that as the best man you will be setting the tone. While humor is almost always welcome and is a good speech-giving technique, it is after all a solemn occasion. Capitalize on being present at a happy occasion, but do not make light of the nuptials just taken.
While everyone is still smiling, you may want to launch into stories of escapades you and the groom have shared in the past. Even the funniest of stories can have a moral, and can give insight into the character of a human being. Hopefully, you will also be telling the bride that her new husband, while having made some silly mistakes in the past, is capable of growth, and that she has made a good choice.
A good idea is to include a reference or two about getting to know the bride and being an observer as these two people decided to begin a dance that would last a lifetime. This is not a boys-only locker room event; include the bride and the new relationship in your speech.
Just before giving the toast, you may want to offer some advice to the happy couple. This may be serious or funny, amusing or thought-provoking. Regardless, express your good wishes for the future, and your confidence in their strength as a couple embarking on a new adventure. Invite everyone to join you in a toast by raising their glass and congratulating the new couple.
